History of the Tote Bag
'tote' means 'to carry a heavy load '.

1940s: Carry ice from car to freezer
Bean's Ice Carrier
The first tote was launched in Maine in 1944 by L.L.Bean as a sturdy, durable, water-resistant canvas bag. Maine was known for stocking large quantity of premium ice in the 19th century. The tote bag was a solution to transport the ice from car to the freezer as refrigerators were not invented at that time. It was also used for groceries and household chores.
1960s: A fashion statement
Boat and Tote
L.L.Bean renamed the bag to Boat and Tote and upgraded the design elements to embrace aesthetics and fashion.
1980s: Merch and self-expression
New York bookstore The Strand made its first Strand tote with cotton duck canvas (more tightly woven than canvas) and an interior lining. Printing company logo, name, address, phone
number, and slogan on the bag as a form of advertisement. Tote bag was transformed into a celebrity status with the birth of the Birkin bag by Hermès.
2010s: Sustainable concerns
Tote bags were the sustainable alternative to disposable plastic grocery bags as it is reusable many more times.
Current: Timeless
The original features of a tote bag remains timeless amidst many design variation and material; non-woven, polyester, laminated polypropylyne woven, canvas, jute, laminated canvas, juco, laminated cotton.
